The word karaoke comes from the Japanese words ‘kara’ meaning ’empty’ and ‘oke’ meaning ‘orchestra’. It first became popular in English in 1979

Karaoke is a Japanese word that refers to a performance in which a person sings along with recorded music. It’s a popular form of entertainment at restaurants and clubs: amateur singers choose their favourite well-known song to sing and then perform it for the crowd.

Eve 6 – Inside out

I would swallow my pride, I would choke on the rindsBut the lack thereof would leave me empty insideSwallow my doubt, turn it inside outFind nothin’ but faith in nothin’Wanna put my tender heart in a blenderWatch it spin ’round to a beautiful oblivionRendezvous, then I’m through with you
I burn, burn like a wicker cabinetChalk white and oh-so-frailI see our time has gotten staleThe tick-tock of the clock is painfulAll sane and logicalI wanna tear it off the wallI hear words in clips and phrasesI think sick like ginger aleMy stomach turns and I exhale
I would swallow my pride, I would choke on the rindsBut the lack thereof would leave me empty insideI would swallow my doubt, turn it inside outFind nothin’ but faith in nothin’Wanna put my tender heart in a blenderWatch it spin ’round to a beautiful oblivionRendezvous, then I’m through with you
So-Cal is where my mind statesBut it’s not my state of mindI’m not as ugly, sad as youOr am I origamiFolded up and just pretendDemented as the motives in your head
I would swallow my pride, I would choke on the rindsBut the lack thereof would leave me empty insideI would swallow my doubt, turn it inside outFind nothin’ but faith in nothin’Wanna put my tender heart in a blenderWatch it spin ’round to a beautiful oblivionRendezvous, then I’m through with you(Rendezvous)
I alone am the one you don’t know you needTake heed, feed your egoMake me blind when your eyes closeSink when you get close, tie me to the bedpostI alone am the one you don’t know you needYou don’t know you need meMake me blind when your eyes closeTie me to the bedpost
I would swallow my pride, I would choke on the rindsThe lack thereof would leave me empty insideSwallow my doubt, turn it inside outFind nothing but faith in nothingWanna put my tender heart in a blenderWatch it spin ’round to a beautiful oblivionRendezvous, then I’m through, now I’m through with you
Through with youRendezvous, then I’m through with you

5 Tips for Singing Karaoke

Here are some other things to keep in mind about how to have a successful karaoke night:

Warm up your voice before singing so you can really hit those high notes! Follow along with this quick video on vocal warm ups for singers.
Look confident. Start with a smile and with your feet planted shoulder width apart. Make no apologies for being on that stage!
Pick a song you really know so you’re not always having to look at the lyrics on the screen. Don’t forget you have an audience that wants you to sing to them!
Use good vocal technique. Breathe low, and keep your sound placed in your mask rather than shouting into the microphone.
Practice at home! YouTube has many excellent channels, such as KaraFun, that can help you practice.
